About me!

About

Firstly, I’d like to thank you for giving me an opportunity to showcase why consideration should be given for me to study Bsc (Hons) General Computing. My name is Shane Marchan and I am from San Juan in Trinidad, an area known for the lesser good of things. I was involved in a lot of activities and sports such as volleyball, basketball, hockey, swimming, football, dancing, poetry contest, musical theory, practical, arrangement and compositions just to name a few. In other words I was a very active child. But, this is my childhood years and as I grew older I found new interest.

Path

I was always supplied with a dose of joy from problem solving in any topic because I love to understand things. I tried and failed many times to get my ideas “out there”. It took some years to realize that the journey I am trying to reach is a lot harder than anicipated.Idea Response. When I realized that a lot of the winning ideas for local contests were fruit chow websites, I realized that I needed to learn how to build my own ideas. It didn't take long to realize that programming could help with automating tasks that I was doing manually and I ended up going through a few languages such as C, Java and Python. Python was the most useful due to the easy syntax, wide array of support, documentation and videos which made it easy to learn and use. Of course reality hit soon after, because python kept me in a cocoon which is arguably mostly for backend applications. Nonetheless programming became my true passion and I decided to make it my career.

Reason

I decided to pursue computing at SBCS and observed that the ABMA pathway would be a good start because it would balance the theory required to thrive in a professional environment while also giving practical experience. While at SBCS I started learning Javascript thanks to my Lecturer, Mr. Moonesh Lutchman. He was the prime reason I started javascript and it has propelled me into the world of web app development more than I could have ever imagined. Strange enough, I purchased a course for javascript in 2015 and never started. All it took was for me to see one line of javascript and I was hooked. I couldn't understand why it took so many lines of code in comparison to Python for the same task and well, I like to understand things. During my studies with SBCS the prerequisites were changed such that the ABMA Computing Diplomas would no longer be accepted for the Bsc in General Computing Top-up at Greenwich and this was the only reason I started to study at SBCS. This was a huge hit to the morale of many students and it can be shown by the amount of students that dropped out before the end of the second year of the two year programme. Thankfully, there was a glimmer of hope because of our inquiries and we were told to send in any certification that can be reviewed for possible approval. I then decided to build this website, 4 web applications and showcase my problem solving skills in Javascript and Python whilst also providing certification for online courses that I completed. I really hope this meets the requirements for my entry into General Computing for the final year. I've been looking forward to this from the first day I started at SBCS. Thank you for your consideration.
